"The YMCA has never been just a building," Chris Berry, Associate Vice President of the YMCA's Edmond District, told Edmond Outlook in its October 2026 issue. Even so, on November 16, 2026, the building changes. It also changes location. The Kupiec East Edmond YMCA opens that day at 4701 E. 15th St. It shares a lobby with the new East Edmond Library under one roof. The YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City, the City of Edmond and the Metropolitan Library System built it together, and Edmond Outlook calls it the first facility of its kind in Oklahoma.
Most coverage treats this as a new gym with a library attached. For anyone who lives in Edmond, it means two of the city's most-used services are moving their center of gravity east of I-35.
The Edmond YMCA has served local families since 1968. That history runs through the Rankin YMCA at 1220 S. Rankin Street. The YMCA's own page for that branch says the building is no longer adequate for its members or for Edmond's growth. The organization's capital campaign gives the same reason for building the new branch.
In June 2025, The Oklahoman reported that Edmond's original YMCA branch was going up for sale while the replacement was under construction. The new branch sits along 15th Street just east of I-35, on land Henderson Hills Baptist Church used to own.
Rankin is still listed as an operating branch, with posted hours, child watch, an indoor pool, a gym and youth sports. No closing date, buyer or future use for the Rankin building has been made public. The YMCA has said how the two branches overlap during the handoff. Anyone who joined the new branch during presale, which started September 1, 2026, can use the Rankin or Mitch Park YMCA until the east-side building opens.
The YMCA calls it a replacement. Members who live near Rankin should expect their nearest full-service Y to move a few miles east once the transition is complete.
The library half of the building matters for the same reason. When the city broke ground in August 2024, the Metropolitan Library System described the existing Edmond Library as the busiest branch in the state, with more than one million checkouts a year. East Edmond Library will be the city's second branch.
According to Metro Library's page for the branch, its services are built for quick visits:
A drive-through window and a lobby locker mean a holds pickup can be a short stop rather than a planned trip across town. The library system calls the branch a "dynamic community hub" for one of Oklahoma County's fastest-growing areas. It has been hiring staff for guest services, circulation and programming, and new hires are training at other Metro Library branches before the opening.
Metro Library has not posted hours for the branch. Its page also doesn't say how library visitors and YMCA members will share the lobby day to day. Until those details are published, the YMCA's posted hours below shouldn't be read as the library's hours.
The YMCA's page for the new branch lists 24-hour access as an amenity. The staffed hours are more limited:
| Day | Staffed Hours | Child Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Thursday | 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. | 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. |
| Friday | 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. | 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. |
| Saturday | 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. | 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. |
| Sunday | 1 to 6 p.m. | 1 to 5 p.m. |
The YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City's general 24-hour access rules limit unstaffed hours to the fitness center. Pools, group exercise studios, basketball courts and other areas close when staff leave. After-hours entry is for members 18 and older, and most members pay a one-time $10 activation fee. The Kupiec branch isn't on the YMCA's general list of 24/7 locations yet, so how after-hours access will work at the new building isn't confirmed.
In practice, a 10 p.m. treadmill session may be possible once 24/7 access is set up there. A swim after 9 p.m. on a weekday, or after 6 p.m. on a Sunday, would not be. Families planning workouts around Child Watch should note that its Friday evening window ends an hour earlier than the rest of the week.
Inside, the YMCA side has an indoor pool, a gym, a fitness center, an indoor track, group and cycle classes, pickleball, EGYM smart equipment, towel service and child care. Edmond Outlook's October feature adds amenities that are new for the Edmond YMCA: a dry sauna, two group exercise studios, a universal and family locker room, a playground and dedicated youth space.
The YMCA's standard all-access rates are listed as:
The YMCA's membership policy says members can use any Greater Oklahoma City location, except those with branch-only or digital memberships. That means current Rankin and Mitch Park members with all-access memberships should be able to use the new building without switching plans. A household closer to Mitch Park on the west side and one near the new east-side branch can use the same membership at either. The YMCA branch page doesn't list a separate founding-member price, though presale enrollment is open.
The opening date has moved since the project started:
As of October 7, opening day is about six weeks away. Neither the YMCA nor Metro Library has posted a grand opening event schedule.
Several things nearby are still in progress this fall and could also change routines east of I-35:
